Team Joplin Report: - consisting of Dr. Jim and Debbie Hamilton and son, Jake, and daughter, Hannah; Drs. Cindy and David Croy and their sons, Ben and Sam; Dr. Geoff Day; and Michelle Luellen. The team left the bitter cold Northwest Arkansas airport early January 3, 2011. Arrived in Port au Prince in the afternoon with 17 checked bags of medicine, supplies, gifts, etc. plus everyone's carry-on. All made it safely.
We were blessed to be met INSIDE baggage by JC and Eric Lotz. Got all loaded onto the NEW TRUCK (!!) and to the orphanage we went. We were met by enthusiastic kids who helped us unload all baggage. Restful evening "getting acquainted with the kids".
Day one on the ground was spent procuring supplies for projects around the orphanage that JC had for us: New benches/repair of broken benches. Wiring/light installation. New shelves in the pharmacy, depot and team room. Finish painting that was started by Richmond team.
Throughout the week Drs. Cindy Croy and Geoff Day organized/stocked/labeled/cataloged the pharmacy. Printed new manual/inventory/instructions in Kreyol. Got pharmacy moved to its own secured room away from child accessible room.
Second thru 5th day worked at a staff member's home site preparing site, moving and transplanting trees and foliage. Digging foundation/footings, carrying sand/rock/concrete to supply the masonry contractors hired by Eric. Foundation and floor was finished at the end or our week. Walls / doors/ windows/ roof was finished the following week. (see photos).
Team was treated to 2 excellent evening meals thru the week by Jennifer Lotz at her home. This was a real treat for everyone as the team all knew Eric and Jennifer and kids from their time serving as a worship leader at our church.
Team was treated to a visit and tour of Zanmi Benni by Eric one morning. A very inspiring work.
Money was raised and donated by the team to take the kids and staff to the beach for a day of rest and fun on Day 6. A great time had by all.
Sunday the team split and visited both Balan Church and JC's church. Dr. Day with the help of Mackentoche did a Cholera education "symposium" after worship in Balan and Dr. Cindy Croy with JC's help did the same at his church.
Back to orphanage for wonderful meal. Day of rest and fun with the kids. Some of the team took a tour downtown to see the palace and cathedral ruins.
Throughout the week as well, Hannah Hamilton and Michelle Luellen led art lessons with the kids and all kids provided us with 2 original masterpieces which are being matted and framed for use at an upcoming fundraising event. Amazing talent abounds in this group of kids.
Team was up early saying reluctant goodbyes January 10 before being delivered to the airport for midmorning flight back to USA. Many blessings had by all on the team and hopefully a few left "on the ground in Haiti" as well.
